Is Heteronormative Really the Normal?

Heteronormative
adjective
denoting or relating to a world view that promotes heterosexuality as the normal or preferred sexual orientation.
Normal. What is it? Being straight? Bisexual? Girl? Boy? Blonde hair? Blue eyes? Is there really even a normal? Being a heterosexual and cisgender (identifying as the gender you were at birth) you really don’t have to explain yourself, but if you are anything in between you do. But here is the thing; You don’t owe an explanation to anyone! It’s no one’s business but your own who you are attracted to, how you identify (as a woman, as a man, as a woman sometimes and a man other times, or whether you don’t identify as any gender), and how you express your gender or non-conforming gender identity.
Certainly, there are a lot of labels. For many people, they’re a way of identifying themselves and discovering their identities. Others, on the other hand, choose to avoid labels altogether. In our world, we commonly think of gender as just male and female, especially when we’re categorized by things like color and clothing. It seems like we can’t even look at anything without seeing it divided into boys and girls — this is heteronormativity. This stereotyped place we live in is basically a naming game, ‘You’re a girl,’ ‘You’re a boy,’ so on and so forth. This isn’t the way humans should be treated, not currently. Therefore, heteronormativity should be gone completely, in my opinion.

  1. I ask a lot of questions in the beginning and you could put the definition of Heteronormative into the article itself... I think that everyone needs to read this and think of how other people feels about this as well. This a really good topic to build on! Good job!

  3. I can see why labels would matter, though. Some people just aren't biologically attracted to certain types of people; you can't fault them for that.

I don't think that gender matters as much as people say it does, anyway.

Your article was well-written, but short. I think that being a little longer could have helped me understand your content a bit better!

  4. I think it's great you're educating people on this topic as many may not know much about it. However, I think you were sorting putting out a generalization which isn't a bad thing. I felt that this was very informative and I agree with what Joel is saying in the comment above. I think you should just elaborate a bit, well done!
